What Size Is a Euro Pillow? Where Does a Lumbar Pillow Go?
Two questions come up constantly when trying to style a sofa or bed: What size pillow do I need? and How do I arrange them?
It is easy to feel overwhelmed by an endless number of pillow sizes, or to end up with a sofa so crowded your guests have nowhere to sit. If you are tired of guessing, I have some answers for you. Below you will find the direct answers, exact dimensions, and professional styling rules you can use to style your bed, armchair or sofa and make your space feel high-end.
What Is a Pillow Sham vs. a Pillowcase?
A sham is a decorative pillow cover designed for display, not for sleeping. While standard pillowcases are open on one end and made of simple sheets, shams feature decorative borders (flanges), patterns, or hidden closures. A Euro sham is simply the decorative cover made to fit a square Euro pillow.
What Size Is a Euro Pillow?
The standard Euro pillow size is 26" × 26". This is the classic size used to achieve a luxury hotel look.
While 26" × 26" is the industry standard, many brands also offer smaller Euro-style accent variants:
Standard Euro: 26" × 26" (Best for beds)
Medium Euro: 24" × 24" (Great for deep sectionals)
Small Euro: 22" × 22" (Perfect for standard sofas—I also have these on my bed because I am a rule breaker!)
Where Do Euro Pillows Go on a Bed?
Euro pillows provide the foundational height and structure for your arrangement. They can be placed in two ways:
Against the headboard: The classic back-row position.
In front of sleep pillows: A modern, layered look that hides your sleeping pillows. <3
How Many Euro Pillows Do You Need?
The number of Euro pillows you use depends entirely on your bed size.
Twin Bed: 1 Euro Pillow
A single 26" × 26" Euro pillow sits perfectly centred against a Twin headboard, providing a clean, singular focal point.
Full / Queen Bed: 2 Euro Pillows
Two Euro pillows side-by-side fit across a Full or Queen mattress seamlessly, completely filling the width without overcrowding the space.
King / Cal King Bed: 2 or 3 Euro Pillows
The standard for a King bed is three Euro pillows to span the full distance. Because a King mattress is so wide, using only two standard Euros can leave a gap in the middle and on the sides. However, design rules are meant to be broken—I personally prefer to cap my Euro pillows at a maximum of two. It gives the pillows room to breathe, and I feel the final look is incredibly clean, polished, and calm. One thing not to overlook though: you MUST use King sleeping pillows on a King bed. If it is up to me, that rule should never be broken.
What Size Is a Lumbar Pillow?
The most common lumbar pillow size is 12" × 20" or 14" × 20". These are the everyday workhorses of pillow styling.
However, lumbar sizes vary based on where you use them:
Standard Accent: 12" × 20" to 14" × 22" (Perfect for chairs, loveseats, and layering)
Slightly Longer: 12" × 24" (Great for standard sofas)
Oversized / Statement: 14" × 26" up to 14" × 36" (An excellent single-pillow solution for King beds or sectionals)
Where Does a Lumbar Pillow Go?
A lumbar pillow always goes at the very front and centre of your arrangement.
Because of its low, horizontal shape, it provides a beautiful visual contrast to the taller square pillows behind it. On a bed, one lumbar (or a sphere pillow) finishes the look. On a sofa, it can be centred or placed in the corners to provide lower-back support.

How to Layer Pillows Like a Pro
How to Arrange Bed Pillows
To style any bed successfully, work from the back of the bed toward the front:
Row 1 (Back):Euro pillows (1 for Twin, 2 for Queen, 2 or 3 for King). These provide the necessary height, structure, and backdrop.
Row 2 (Middle):Your standard sleeping pillows. Tucking your everyday sleeping pillows in the middle row keeps your bed looking clean, fresh, and intentionally styled while hiding plain pillowcases.
Row 3 (Front): One statement lumbar or sphere pillow. Centringthis single piece in the very front ties the whole look together.
How to Arrange Sofa Pillows
Loveseat: 2 to 3 pillows maximum (Two 18" squares in the corners + one small lumbar).
Standard Sofa: 3 to 5 pillows (Two 20" squares in the back, two 18" squares in the middle, one lumbar centred).
Sectional: Group in odd numbers. Place a 22" square in the deep corner, flanked by smaller squares and lumbars on the wings.
How to Style Sphere Pillows
Sphere pillows are very popular at the moment, and with good reason. They add instant visual interest by breaking up the straight lines of traditional square and rectangular cushions. They are also playful and fun—I enjoy throwing them at my family.
Where they go: Always place sphere pillows in the very front row of a bed, sofa, or armchair arrangement.
Styling Rule: Never centre a single sphere pillow on a couch. Instead, nestle it slightly off-centre right next to a square or lumbar pillow. The contrast between the round edge and the sharp corner creates a perfectly styled, effortless look.
3 Pro Tips for the Perfect Look
Size Up Your Inserts: For a plump, high-end look, always buy an insert that is 2 inches larger than your pillow cover. For example, use a 28" × 28" down or down-alternative insert inside a 26" × 26" Euro sham. If you are struggling with limp or deflated cushions, check out our full guide on Why Your Decorative Pillows Look Flat (And How to Fix Them).
Mix Shapes and Textures: Keep your tall Euro layer simple and neutral. Add patterns, textures (like velvet or linen), and unique shapes toward the front row.
Scale to Your Furniture: Large furniture swallows small pillows. If you have a deep, plush sofa, bypass 16" squares entirely and start with 22" base pillows.
