Why Your Decorative Pillows Look Flat (And How to Fix Them)
The Question:
“How do your pillows always look perfect?”
“I just paid a small fortune for my new covers and my pillows look dead.”
Honestly? It’s almost never the cover.
You didn’t waste your money — you just got let down by the inside.
If you’ve ever invested in beautiful pillow covers — linen, bouclé, hand-woven, perfectly neutral — only to put them on and feel underwhelmed, you’re in very good company. Almost everyone assumes the issue is the fabric, the colour, or the size of the pillow itself.
It’s rarely any of those things.
The issue is almost always the insert.
And here’s the simple truth: your pillow insert should almost always be bigger than the cover. It’s one of those quiet design rules interior designers follow instinctively — and once you know it, you can’t unsee the difference.
The Golden Rule We Always Come Back To
Choose an insert that’s 1–2 inches larger than your pillow cover.
This applies to decorative pillows on sofas, beds, benches, window seats — anywhere you want things to look intentional but still lived-in.
For example:
18" × 18" cover → 20" × 20" insert
20" × 20" cover → 22" × 22" insert
That slight oversizing is what gives pillows that full, tailored look — the kind you notice in well-designed homes but can’t quite explain.
Why Designers Size Inserts Up (Every Time)
First: structure.
A larger insert fills the corners properly. Instead of drooping edges or hollow corners, the pillow holds its shape — even after people have actually used it.
Second: polish.
When an insert is too small, the cover wrinkles, slouches, and folds in ways that feel accidental. A snug insert keeps the fabric smooth and composed.
Third: longevity.
Pillows with undersized inserts tend to look tired very quickly. A properly sized insert helps your pillows keep their shape over time — not just on day one.
And finally — comfort. Decorative pillows shouldn’t feel stiff or flat. A fuller insert gives support without feeling overstuffed.
How Much Bigger Should You Go?
This is where personal style comes in.
For a plush, editorial look
Size up 2 inches.
This is our go-to for sofas and beds — especially when pillows are meant to anchor the space visually.
For a softer, still structured feel
Size up 1 inch.
Great for layered pillows, reading nooks, or more relaxed living spaces.
For a deliberately slouchy look
Same-size insert — though we rarely recommend this unless the look is intentionally casual. Even then, it’s a very specific aesthetic.
A Note on Pillow Placement
Where the pillow lives matters, too.
Sofas: fuller inserts hold their shape against back cushions and arms
Beds: oversized inserts prevent pillows from disappearing behind euro shams
Benches & chairs: structure keeps things from looking temporary or “afterthought”
In other words — the more visible the pillow, the more important insert size becomes.
What About Lumbar Pillows?
Rectangular pillows follow the same principle — arguably even more so.
Lumbar pillows are prone to collapsing in the centre if the insert isn’t large enough. Sizing up keeps them crisp and supportive.
For example:
12" × 20" cover → 13" × 21" or 14" × 22" insert
This is especially important on beds, benches, and entryway seating where the pillow needs to hold its shape.
Insert Fill Matters (More Than People Realize)
Down or down-blend inserts
Naturally fluffy, soft, and moldable.
They work beautifully when sized up 1–2 inches and give that effortless “sink-in” feel.
Down-alternative / polyfill inserts
These compress more easily, which means sizing up is even more important if you want a full look.
If you’re unsure which fill you have, or you’re between sizes, our rule is simple: go slightly larger. It’s always easier to soften a pillow than to make a flat one look intentional.

The Takeaway, Between Friends
If there’s one detail interior designers quietly obsess over, it’s this:
a slightly oversized pillow insert instantly elevates a space.
It’s subtle. No one will point it out. But everyone feels the difference.
So next time you’re standing there with coffee in hand, debating which size to order —
size up. Your sofa (and your living room) will thank you.
